Alliance of Communities Transforming Syracuse (ACTS) Hosts Nationally Acclaimed Activist to Speak on Building Power for Change

Nationally acclaimed activist Rashad Robinson will visit Syracuse on Sunday, Sept. 25, to speak on “Racism, Poverty & Power: Empowering People of Color to Create an Equitable Syracuse” at 7 p.m. at Living Water Church of God in Christ, 121 Huron St.

Robinson, executive director of Color of Change, a national organization of more than 1 million members building an online movement for racial justice, has appeared in hundreds of news stories, interviews and political discussions and media outlets.color of change small logo

After Robinson’s address, a panel of local leaders assembled by ACTS and the audience will discuss overcoming racism, poverty and the unequal distribution of power with an eye on transforming our communities’ political, economic, and social systems so that we have equity for all.

Larry Williams, director of Syracuse’s Save Our Youth, will moderate the discussion. Confirmed panelists include: Yusuf Abdul-Qadir, director of the CNY Chapter of NYCLU; Andrew Maxwell, City of Syracuse Director of Policy and Innovation; Helen Hudson, Syracuse Councilor at Large;  Ricky Brown, director of Community Engagement at Home Headquarters; and Mark Spadafore, political organizer at 1199 SEIU.

Barry Lentz, chair of the ACTS Research and Action Committee, said this event is a vital step in increasing voter participation, engaging people of color more robustly in the political process and encouraging leaders from underrepresented groups to consider seeking elective office.Alliance of Communities_logo

Robinson’s visit and talk are expected to launch ACTS’ long-term agenda and near-term efforts to move decision-making into the hands of those affected by local issues.

The event is open to the public and all are encouraged to come and hear this dynamic speaker, ask questions of Robinson and the local panelists, and be a part of identifying and developing vibrant new local leaders.
