Campaign Tours Historic Hotel Syracuse and PriceRite on South Ave to Meet Employees Who Have Jobs As a Result
Syracuse, NY, November 5, 2017 – As the 2017 Mayoral Campaign comes to a close, independent candidate Ben Walsh placed a spotlight on his track record of creating jobs for City residents.
“I am so proud of the role that I have played in advancing these two important projects that have revitalized vacant City properties and put City residents to work,” said Ben Walsh. “This City is ready for change, and I am ready to bring a non-partisan, solution-oriented approach to City Hall.”
The Hotel Syracuse sat vacant for more than a decade before a collaborative effort between the City of Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York state and developer Ed Riley resulted in an investment of more than $70 million dollars in the dilapidated structure.
As Deputy Director of Neighborhood and Business Development for the City of Syracuse, Ben Walsh participated in weekly meetings for two and a half years to get the project across the finish line. Today, the Hotel Syracuse employees more than 250 people, many of whom are City residents under a deal Walsh helped negotiate.
The PriceRite project was a result of a decades-long effort by residents of the South Ave. neighborhood to attract a grocery store to serve a food desert. Walsh worked for years with neighborhood leaders to acquire property, attract a grocer and secure the financing necessary for the project. Today, the project employs more than 70 people, many of whom live in the neighborhood.
“As I have walked the streets of the City and met with voters, I have heard loud and clear the need for more jobs and greater economic opportunity for our City,” said Walsh. “I am the only candidate in this race with a track record of job creation and I am ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work to bring jobs and investment to the people and neighborhoods that need them the most.”
