Consensus Extends Public Comment Period to May 1

Commission will add community forums and new online presentations

Syracuse, N.Y., Feb. 26, 2016 – Consensus, the Commission on Local Government Modernization, will extend the public comment period on its Draft Options Report and Preliminary Recommendations to May 1. The Commission’s full Report to the Community will follow its review of public input collected during the three-month public comment period.

“The community asked for more time to consider the Commission’s preliminary recommendations, and we are listening,” said Melanie Littlejohn, chair of the Consensus Public Engagement Committee. “We are encouraged by the active dialogue that has begun. Never before has the discussion advanced this far, and we want it to continue.”

Consensus RegionIn extending the comment period, the Commission will be adding “community forums,” giving citizens the opportunity to engage with Consensus volunteers regarding the recommendations. Dates and locations for the forums will be announced in early March. The Commission will also continue to schedule presentations with groups of 20 or more interested in hosting a meeting.

The next previously scheduled public meeting is 6 p.m., Monday, Feb. 29 at the Southwest Community Center.

By March 10, the ConsensusComment.com website will also feature online audio and visual versions of the community presentations. Residents will be able to select from a menu of presentations; view them online; and then offer input in the Comment on the Report section of the site.

“The Commission is not asking people for any decisions. We want input so we can provide more information and details based on the direction our community wants to go,” Littlejohn said. “Even after our full Report to the Community this spring, people will still be able to have input through their local governments and elected leaders. Consensus can’t force anything on anyone. In the end, it’s up to all of us.”

In addition to ConsensusComment.com and forums and presentations, the public is able to provide input via: social media at www.facebook.com/consensuscny; email to info@consensuscny.com; telephone at (315) 470-1980 or fax at (315) 476-1681; or written mail to Consensus c/o SYRACUSE 20/20, 120 Madison Street, 15th Floor, Syracuse, NY 13202.
