Students Encouraged to Apply Before April 20, 2017 Summer Session Deadline
More than 1,600 Students Have Participated Since Launch of Program
Applications for 2017-2019 Empire State Fellows Class Open Through March 15, 2017
The New York State Department of Civil Service today announced hundreds of new student internships available throughout New York State government across a wide array of State agencies – both upstate and downstate – and encouraged students to apply for 2017 summer session internship opportunities prior to the April 20, 2017 application deadline. An estimated 500 student internships are expected to be available for the 2017 summer session.
The Student Intern Program is one component of Governor Cuomo’s New New York Leaders Initiative, which is designed to renew the connection between the public and New York State to ensure that State government is diverse, talented, and prepared to lead for generations to come. Through the Student Intern Program, undergraduate and graduate students are exposed to the work of governing, while gaining valuable hands-on program experience and interaction with government leaders and policy-makers.
“Through Governor Cuomo’s New New York Leaders initiative, New York State continues to shape the next generation of leaders, exposing them to the work of governing and providing them with valuable skills and marketable work experience that will assist them as they begin new careers,” said Lola W. Brabham, Acting Commissioner of the New York State Department of Civil Service. “This valuable hands-on experience can provide an opportunity to enhance academic course work, while providing a competitive edge in the job market.”
New York State has a one-stop website – nysinternships.cs.ny.gov– that allows applicants to view job descriptions, create profiles, specify occupational interests, and upload resumes, writing samples, and letters of recommendation. Students can apply for multiple internships at the same time. A current list of available internships for the summer 2017 session is available at: https://nysinternships.cs.ny.gov/nnyl/main/viewinternships.cfm
The Student Intern Program is open to graduate and undergraduate students at colleges and universities throughout New York State, as well as New York State residents enrolled elsewhere. Opportunities include paid and unpaid positions and internships may provide academic credit depending on the policy of the intern’s educational institution.
Three internship sessions are offered each year: Spring, Summer, and Fall.

The Empire State Fellows Program, another component of the New New York Leaders Initiative, is a full-time leadership training program that recruits exceptional and diverse professionals and prepares them for careers as New York State policy-makers. Since its inception in 2012, Governor Cuomo has appointed more than 25 Empire State Fellows to senior positions in the administration, following the completion of the two-year program.
New York Secretary of State Rossana Rosado said: “I commend Governor Cuomo for providing this valuable opportunity to those students interested in public service. As I have recommended to mid-career professionals in regard to the upcoming deadline to apply to be an Empire State Fellow, I urge students throughout New York State to apply for the Student Intern Program for a chance to gain exposure and insight into State government.”
Applications for the 2017-2019 Empire State Fellows Class close on March 15, 2017. To apply to be an Empire State Fellow, candidates must email a professional resume or Curricula Vitae, a personal statement explaining interest in the program, along with two letters of recommendation to email@example.com by the March 15 deadline. Once selected, the Empire State Fellows class will work closely with senior administration officials and participate in policy decisions that will help transform New York State.
