Dog days of a Syracuse summer

With great sadness I watched as the late news showed visuals of dogs who’d been shot by Syracuse City Police. The dog pack had neighbors running for their lives. Thereafter a calm family friend discounted the attack by stating that they were nice, loving dogs that had been around children.

Dogs and humans are so alike, especially our behaviors. Before you start heaving about our spiritual superiority, look at the dogs you’ve been attached to in your life (if you were lucky).

We’re both den animals, we don’t like to crap where we have to sleep and eat. If we weren’t crate trained or socialized properly we’ll tear up the house or bite people. In the case of people we hurt other people.
As children we’re crate trained. After a certain age we are taught to take our poop business to a special room. Our family units are no different than a dog pack, we just think we’re better than them…animals.

There are well-socialized dog packs and there are others who are mean snarling and biting at everyone they meet. Kinda like Rush Limbaugh and Cindy Sheehan. Bad dogs.

We give our kids too many treats without value and assign too much value to our treats. What difference is it tossing a treat to a dog to get him to go into a crate or buying an X-Box for your crate or, um, home? Not much.
I wanted to get a dog. Do I purchase or go to the SPCA to adopt? There are so many dogs with different temperaments. Some are especially handy in service work helping the sick or blind. Every dog seems to have some innate purpose.
Some say that pit bull-type dogs were bred to take down lions. Many I’ve seen were trusted companions.

How many times have we heard of a loyal canine companion saving their human friend? Lassie was no joke. “Is Timmy in the well boy?” Of course Lassie would say, “Woof Woof!”

We all know “alpha dog” men and women who suck all the air out of a room. Those who eat like it’s their last meal slurping and splattering like momma dog never had a chance to teach son or daughter how to maneuver a fork with class.
When we run across “bad dogs” we re-crate them to the tune of $40,000 per year. It’s called prison. And when one of our fellow citizens commits a heinous crime we euthanize. We’re not a no-kill shelter.

When people make enough money they move into an exclusive kennel and call it a “gated community.”

The dogs we all saw on our television screens were doing what dogs do. They were in a pack and something dynamic in their situation changed. It’s too late for the four dogs. They were euthanized. Now the owner may be crated.
