Dog Dies in Mountainview Avenue Fire

Syracuse, N.Y. – On Saturday May 4th at approximately 6:39 p.m., the Syracuse Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 211 Mountainview Ave. Within 3 minutes of dispatch, companies from Fire Station 17 (2317 Burnet Ave.) were on scene of the one-story wood framed dwelling. On their arrival, heavy fire was observed from the rear walk-out basement. Firefighters initiated aggressive offensive operations to control the fire and search for potential victims.

Firefighters from Truck Co. 5 (Fire Station 10, 2030 E. Genesee St.) made a valiant effort to revive a dog found in the basement during their systematic search, however the dog did not survive. It took crews approximately 25 minutes to extinguish the fire, and firefighters remained on scene for a time conducting overhaul operations.

No occupants were home at the time of the fire. The fire investigator has determined the fire originated in the basement and the cause is still under investigation.  There were no injuries reported in this incident.
