Elevator Constructors Recruit Apprentices Local Union #35

Albany, NY (August 11, 2021) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local Union #35, will conduct a recruitment from October 5, 2021 through November 4, 2021 for one elevator-escalator constructor and modernizer apprentice, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for four recruitment regions – the Capital District, Central, Mohawk Valley, and North Country regions of the state.

Applications will only be accepted online, anytime during the recruitment period, at www.neiep.org/careers.aspx. Applicants who do not have access to a computer may visit their local library or NYS Department of Labor Career Center.

Applicants must take and score a minimum of 70 on the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test. A testing fee of $25 must be paid at the time of testing. The payment must be in the form of a postal money order or bank certified check (no cash or personal checks will be accepted). Please note, you may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need. A photo ID will be required on the day of testing. Must take a tool assessment designed to assess knowledge of basic tools and their use, as well as basic measuring skills. Scores are part of the evaluation.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required (verification of high school diploma, transcript or diploma or an official report of GED or TASC test results) after an offer of employment and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship. Failure to provide verification on stated date of an offer of employment, said apprentice will be removed from the hiring list immediately for failing to meet stated requirements.
    • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
    • Must attest to be physically able to perform the work required of the trade, which may include: lifting, climbing, and working from heights, without posing a threat to the health of themselves or others.
    • Must reside within the jurisdiction of Local Union #35, which includes the following counties: Albany, Clinton, Columbia (towns of Claverack, Hillsdale, Ghent, Stockport, Austerlitz, Canaan, New Lebanon, Chatham, Kinderhook, Stuyvesant, Greenport), Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene (towns of Durham, Greenville, New Baltimore, Coxsackie, Cairo, Athens, and Catskill within a 30 mile radius of Albany), Hamilton, Herkimer, Madison (excluding the towns of Lenox, Sullivan, Chittenango, Fenner, Cazenovia, Nelson, Eaton, De Ruyter, Georgetown, Lebanon), Montgomery, Oneida (excluding Camden, Florence, Vienna), Otsego, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren, and Washington.
    • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
