Syracuse, NY-On Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 6:03 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported house on fire at 519 Burnet Ave. Firefighters from Station 9, on Shuart Ave, arrived at the scene two minutes later and found a two-story wood frame multi-family residence with a large amount of fire on the second floor and a bystander reporting someone was trapped inside. The initial crew on scene transmitted a signal ‘99’, indicating a working fire.
As the rest of the initial dispatched companies arrived, teams of firefighters moved hoses down the long driveway to the house located behind a business. Other teams made entry to search for the people reportedly trapped inside. Two hoses were deployed through blinding smoke and high heat to extinguish the fire burning throughout the second floor. Searching firefighters working through no visibility and lots of contents located an unconscious adult victim on the second floor. Due to the smoke, heat, and still-burning fire, the decision was made to bring the victim out a second-floor window. Crews operating on the outside positioned a ladder, climbed to the window, and carried the unconscious adult down the ladder and to an awaiting AMR stretcher. Most of the fire was extinguished eighteen minutes after crews were dispatched. The last hot spots were cooled, and the fire was declared out in an additional nine minutes. Crews remain at the scene as of the writing of this release.
The building is a multi-family residence. The second floor sustained extensive fire damage. The origin and cause of the fire are still under investigation. One adult victim was transported from the scene by AMR. There are no reported injuries to Fire Department personnel.
A total of 47 Fire Department Personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
