First Pools to Open Will Be Burnet and Thornden Parks; Onondaga and Schiller to Open for the Season on Sunday June 19
SYRACUSE N.Y. –The City will open its pools, starting with those in Burnet Park and Thornden Park on Saturday, June 18. The pools in Onondaga Park and Schiller Park will open Sunday, June 19. The remainder of the City’s pools will open on June 27.
“The City’s pools provide a hub of fun and safe summertime enjoyment for children and families and I encourage everyone in our community to enjoy this great resource,” said Syracuse Mayor Stephanie A. Miner. “We are looking forward to another exciting summer of recreation in the parks and pools of Syracuse.”
The Mayor’s office is once again collecting bathing suits for the Downtown Y’s annual Urban Swim Program. Mayor Miner launched a pilot program to collect and distribute swimsuits to girls and young women in our community after recognizing that many did not have appropriate swimwear. In its first year, 2011, the drive collected more than 250 swimsuits that were distributed them to organizations including the Huntington Family Center, Syracuse Housing Authority, Bishop Foery Foundation and Learn as You Grow Daycare. The program has continued to gain momentum with numerous organizations aiding in the collection effort, collecting around 500 swimsuits annually.
The swimsuit drive is a cornerstone of the Y’s Urban Swim program, giving young men and women as well as families the tools and skills they need for healthy physical activity. Those interested in donating a swimsuit can drop them off in the Mayor’s Office Lobby of City Hall. Those interested in receiving bathing suits should contact the Downtown Y at (315) 474-6851.
Pools in eight different locations throughout the City are free to the public. More information about Syracuse’s pools including locations, hours of operation, and listings of activities is available online at www.syrgov.net/parks.
