GENIUS NY Opens Round 4 Applications

This week, GENIUS NY began accepting applications for the fourth round of the year-long business accelerator. The program, which is funded by Empire State Development, will invest more than $3 million in five finalist companies, including a grand prize of $1 million. Applications will be accepted through October 1, 2019 from entrepreneurs and early-stage businesses focused on unmanned systems, including unmanned aerial, ground, and marine systems; internet of things, and data-to-decision and cross-connected platforms sectors.

Already, more than 50 applications from around the globe have been submitted following AUVSI Xponential, the world’s largest unmanned systems conference. Several GENIUS NY teams’ progress was highlighted throughout the multi-day conference. And, this year, PreVision Corp. participated in and won AUVSI’s annual 2019 Startup Showdown at the event.

The impact of the program can also be seen in the successes of other finalists. Fotokite, last year’s winner, announced it has partnered with Pierce Manufacturing Inc., a top supplier of firetrucks in North America, to integrate an autonomous tethered “kite” drone in emergency vehicles to help provide firefighters with situational awareness. The company has also made new hires and moved into its new U.S. headquarters in The Tech Garden. EagleHawk recently won the Innovative Technology of the Year Award at 2019 Infotech Buffalo Emerging Technology Awards Showcase. Dropcopter, will be featured on a new BBC World News show called Follow the Food, currently scheduled to air May 28. The show looks at the future of food production, the challenges facing modern farming, and some of the solutions that are being tried in different parts of the world, such as those being deployed by Dropcopter.

The success of these GENIUS NY teams is the direct result of the investments made by Governor Andrew Cuomo. We are grateful for his continued focus and support to grow the UAS industry in Central New York.
