“After four years of little more than deflection, NRA-kowtowing, thoughts, and prayers in the wake of Las Vegas, Sutherland Springs, El Paso, Parkland, and far too many more acts of gun violence, I applaud President Biden and Attorney General Garland for taking action yesterday to help keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people.
“Make no mistake: while curbing the spread of ghost guns, subjecting guns with a stabilizing brace to National Firearms Act restrictions, and publishing model Red Flag legislation will save lives, they are first steps, a bucket in the face of an ocean of violence across our country that every day kills more than 100 people, wounds more than 230, and devastates exponentially more. The American people need Republicans in Congress to do their jobs and pass real, common-sense gun reform.
“Changing the law to require a background check on all gun sales, ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, implement Red Flag orders, and close the Charleston loophole is overwhelmingly popular, constitutional, and effective. We’ve proven as much in New York State, where our nation-leading gun violence prevention agenda, including the SAFE Act we passed after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, hasn’t stopped anyone with a legal right to buy a gun from doing so, but has made us the safest big state in the country. With President Biden in the White House, Congress has an opportunity to make our model the law of the land. I urge them to take it.”
