Grand Opening of Credit Union Office at Syracuse Housing Authority

New credit union branch brings financial opportunities and affordable services to economically distressed neighborhood

Syracuse, NY | Cooperative Federal, a community development credit union, has partnered with the Syracuse Housing Authority (SHA) to open a new branch office. The office is co-located with the housing authority’s Central Office on Burt Street, where it can serve residents of nearby housing developments as well as the surrounding South Side neighborhood.

On April 28, Cooperative Federal welcomes elected representatives, community development leaders, and SHA staff and residents to join Cooperative Federal for a Grand Opening celebration. The new location of Cooperative Federal will help counter concentrated poverty in the South Side community, which is currently a “bank desert.”

Cooperative Federal provides low-cost financial services, such as money orders and basic accounts, as well as specialized programs to help members establish credit, purchase cars, start microbusinesses and purchase homes. Syracuse Housing Authority’s leadership invited Cooperative Federal to open this branch office as part of its vision for creating a revitalized, walkable community south of downtown.
