Gun Violence Suppression Detail of the Syracuse Police Find “Ghost Gun” during Traffic Stop

On Thursday, February 26th, 2021, at around 9:40 P.M., Officers Bebernitz and Nellis, of the Gun Violence Suppression Detail conducted a traffic stop of a Nissan Maxima in the 2300 block of Midland Ave. The vehicle was occupied by three males.  According to Syracuse Police during the traffic stop, Officers observed evidence of drugs inside of the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, Officers located an illegally possessed, untraceable, loaded, black Polymer P-80 9mm semi-automatic handgun, commonly referred to as a “ghost gun.” In the end, Rakiem Spears, 20 Travis Balaam 24, and Najour Wright, 19 were all arrested and charged with felony weapons charges.  Wright was also charged with a drug charge. All the males were lodged at the Onondaga County Justice Center.

While Officers were investigating this traffic stop, a female, Shakayla Johnson, 27 was arrested and charged with Obstruction of Governmental Administration for her actions interfering with the Officers during the stop. Johnson was released on an appearance ticket.
