In Response to Walt Shepperd’s Q & A with District Attorney, William Fitzpatrick

“I do not agree with District Attorney Fitzpatrick that our community is reluctant to be outraged by the prevalent gang violence. He seems to downplay our anti-violence efforts, but I have not seen Mr. Fitzpatrick at these events. If he stands with us he will see that Syracuse citizens are beyond outraged. We are desperate to protect ourselves and our children. Administrative support from the head of our criminal justice system might help galvanize more people to action. Instead, Mr. Fitzpatrick appears eager to put dads in jail, which contributes to the lack of fatherly presence he noticed during the Evans trial. Last, whether or not Mr. Fitzpatrick agrees with the life choices of single mothers, punishing children by taking away “better living space” is outrageous. All of our children deserve habitable living quarters-even if their unwed mother has (gasp!) multiple children by more than one man.
