Kool & The Gang, Joe Jonas’s DNCE, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stephen Marley; Late Additions Fill Out Chevy Court Lineup For The 2017 Great New York State Fair

A Tribe Called Red, Symphoria, Kool & The Gang, Also Join Most Diverse Lineup Ever

Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stephen Marley to Perform On Chevy Court at The Great New York State Fair

The 2017 Great New York State Fair will “Celebrate” its finale with one of the greatest funk and R&B outfits of all time, as Kool & The Gang hit the Chevy Court stage at 6 pm on Labor Day, Sept. 4, Acting Fair Director Troy Waffner announced today.

The Fair also announced several other shows, filling out all but one slot in a lineup Waffner calls the greatest and most diverse in the history of Chevy Court.  DNCE, the dance-rock group headed by ex-Jonas Brother Joe Jonas, will perform at 8 pm Saturday, Sept. 2.  Rock band Skid Row performs at 2 pm August 31. R&B singer songwriter Tinashe performs at 2 pm Saturday, Sept. 2.  The Canadian First Nations electronic DJ collective A Tribe Called Red returns after an excellent performance at last year’s Six Nations Day with a 2 pm show Sept. 1.  The Syracuse-based symphony orchestra Symphoria presents an exciting pop culture-influenced show Saturday, August 26 at 8 pm.

Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stephen Marley to Perform On Chevy Court at The Great New York State Fair Replacement for acts that had previously cancelled

The band allmusic.com calls “the definitive Southern rock band,” Lynyrd Skynyrd returns to the Great New York State Fair at 1 p.m. August 27 for what should be a blistering rock show, while reggae master and Grammy award winner Stephen Marley performs on Chevy Court at 2 p.m. August 26.

The legacy began more than four decades ago in Jacksonville, Florida, and halted for a decade by the 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. Since then, the band tragically lost Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson and Huey Thomasson, yet Lynyrd Skynyrd rocks on with original member Gary Rossington joined by Johnny Van Zant, Rickey Medlock, Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Michael Cartellone, Johnny Colt, Peter Keys, Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Chase. With a catalog of over 60 albums, sales beyond 30 million worldwide and their beloved classic American rock anthem “Sweet Home Alabama” having over two million downloaded ringtones, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a cultural icon that appeals to all generations.

Stephen “Ragga” Marley is the second eldest son of reggae legend Bob Marley and Rita Marley. He was raised in Kingston, Jamaica and started singing professionally at seven-years old with his elder siblings Ziggy, Sharon and Cedella as The Melody Makers. The singer, songwriter, musician and producer has consecutively landed #1 on the U.S. Billboard Reggae Album Chart for all his solo albums and has earned eight Grammys for Best Reggae Album. He won this accolade as a solo artist for albums “Mind Control,” “Mind Control Acoustic” and “Revelation Part I: The Root of Life,” as producer for Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley’s “Half Way Tree” and “Welcome To Jamrock” and as a member of Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers for “Conscious Party,” “One Bright Day” and “Fallen Is Babylon.”

“We are very excited to have artists of the stature of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Stephen Marley join our lineup. I believe these are ‘must-see’ shows and know that people are going to enjoy them,” said Troy Waffner, Acting Fair Director.

This will be the sixth appearance at the Fair for Lynyrd Skynyrd and the debut for Stephen Marley as a lead performer, though he was part of Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers when the band performed at the Fair in 1989.

The Fair also announces that Post Malone has cancelled his appearance at the Fair, scheduled for 2 pm Sunday, August 27.  He accepted an offer to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards, which take place the same day.  A replacement for that show, the final opening on the Chevy Court lineup, will be announced soon.

Update: Acting Fair Director Troy Waffner announced today that DJ Khaled and Tinashe cancelled their scheduled performances at the Great New York State Fair’s Chevy Court.  DJ Khaled received an offer to perform on the MTV Video Music Awards, while the reason for Tinashe’s decision is not known. The Fair is seeking replacements for both shows.

“Now that everyone can see the entire Chevy Court lineup, it’s clear that we’ve achieved our goal of providing the biggest and most diverse lineup in our long history.  We’ve truly tried to find something for everyone while growing our reputation as the best free stage at any state fair in the country.  And our closing show should be a great party with Kool and The Gang. That’s a group with so many terrific hits and timeless songs that make everyone want to dance.  We’re closing the Fair on a high note,” said Waffner.

Fireworks will light the skies over the Fairgrounds to bring the 2017 Fair to an end after the Kool and The Gang show, at approximately 9 pm.
