Let the “Great American Smokeout” be your day to start your journey toward a smoke-free life

The American Cancer Society and Tobacco Free Network of CNY are committed to promoting the Great American Smokeout (GASO) as a day to encourage the community to take action to quit smoking and support others trying to quit throughout the City of Syracuse.

Syracuse, N.Y. – With smoking still ranked the number one preventable cause of death and illness in the world. There are 38 million Americans smoking cigarettes. Smoking causes more than  480,000  deaths every year and 16 million Americans are currently living with a smoking-related disease.

The Great American Smokeout (GASO) is an awareness day to encourage people to quit smoking. GASO is celebrated on the third Thursday of November.  The American Cancer Society’s 43rd annual GASO was celebrated on Thursday, November 15.

Tobacco Free Network of CNY(TFN) is partnering with Contact Community Services within the Syracuse City School District to share educational messages to students, families and faculty alike. TFN of CNY has promoted GASO as a day to encourage the students to take action to quit smoking and support others trying to quit by creating a tobacco free community. TFN educates community members and key stakeholders with evidence-based approaches that are proven to decrease smoking in youth, motivate adults to quit and eliminate secondhand smoke exposure.

There is overwhelming evidence that more youth are smoking today than ever, though most  youth are using electronic cigarettes such as the JUUL. “Studies show that within one year of using an electronic cigarette a person will use traditional cigarettes.” Ana McGough Reality Check member from ITC.

Schools across Onondaga County will share educational messages and information for smokers to quit. The theme for the Great American Smokeout is – Day One- that quitting smoking isn’t easy. It takes time. And a plan. You don’t have to stop smoking in one day. Start with day one. Let this day be your day to start your journey toward a smoke-free life.
