Man Dies After Being Run Over by Vehicle, Woman to be charged with Manslaughter

Syracuse, N.Y. – On Friday, November 23, 2018 at approximately 6:24 P.M., Syracuse Police Officers responded to 106 Latimer Terr. in regards to domestic related assault.  Their investigation revealed that Ajja McClain ran her boyfriend, Michael Garrett over with her van during an argument. Garrett was transported to Upstate University Hospital by AMR Ambulance for treatment. He sustained multiple fractures to his right leg.

Since McClain fled the scene before police arriving, officers applied for an arrest warrant for her. McClain, 33 years of age, of Syracuse was arrested on that warrant on December 18, 2018 and lodged in the Onondaga County Justice Center on the charges of Assault 2nd and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th.

Also on December 18, 2018, Detectives were notified that Garrett, 48 years of age, also of Syracuse, had died while receiving continued medical attention in an area hospital.  Garrett’s body was transported to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.  The autopsy determined that Garrett died of complications from the injuries he received after being struck by that vehicle, and this incident is now being investigated as a homicide.

As a result of that investigation, Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division arrested McClain this morning, charging her with Manslaughter 1st. She is lodged in the Onondaga County Justice Center, to be arraigned today on the new charge.

This investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Syracuse Police Department at (315) 442-5222.  All calls will be kept confidential.  Anonymous information may also be submitted by using the “SPD Tips” App, available on Android and iPhones.
