Maria DeSantis and The DeSantis Orchestra honored by the Chairman of the Onondaga County Legislature

On Wednesday, July 27, at 12 noon, the Chairman of the Onondaga County Legislature, James Rowley, presented Maria DeSantis and The DeSantis Orchestra with a Gold Seal, in celebration of the orchestra’s 75th anniversary.

Auditorium

What makes this presentation unique is that it happened at Syracuse’s STEAM High School, in the very auditorium where The DeSantis Orchestra first performed publicly in 1947. The school was operating as Central High School at that time.

Maria took over the band from her father, Mario, who founded it and led it for nearly 70 years. The group has grown to include a rotating roster of about 80 of Central New York’s most extraordinary musicians and vocalists.

They perform in various types of groups – duos, trios, nine-piece, 12-piece, and 18-piece – and play community events, weddings, special events, union gatherings and benefits. In addition, the Orchestra has backed up many national entertainers including Natalie Cole, Bernadette Peters and Mary Wilson of The Supremes.
