Off Duty Sheriff’s Deputy Involved in Accident Charged with DWI

Town of Onondaga, New York- The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office reports that an off duty Custody Department Deputy has been charged with driving while intoxicated after his vehicle strikes another vehicle yesterday evening on Velasko Road in the Town of Onondaga.

On July 7th, at approximately 9:53 pm, a Sheriff’s Deputy patrolling in the Town of Onondaga came upon a two car accident on Velasko Road near Country Club Drive. While investigating the accident, deputies discovered that one of the operators involved in the accident appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Deputies learned that the operator had been traveling south bound on Velasko Road when his 2020 Nissan sedan crossed over into the north bound lane and side swiped a north bound 2012 Honda SUV.

The driver of the Nissan was identified as Melvin DeJesus Jr. (38) of Syracuse, a Custody Deputy with the Sheriff’s Office since 2009. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, operating a motor vehicle with a BAC of .08% or higher, aggravated DWI and failure to keep right. A passenger in DeJesus’ vehicle sustained a minor injury.

The operator of the Honda sustained a minor injury. A passenger in that vehicle was not injured.

DeJesus has been suspended without pay per New York State Civil Service requirements. An internal investigation is ongoing. He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Onondaga Court on September 16th.
