The Built to Build Pre-Apprenticeship (BBPA) program, under the leadership of County Executive Joanie Mahoney, is designed to train and prepare minorities for careers in the construction trades. During the free ten-week program, pre-apprentices will learn blueprint reading, construction math, work safety, communication skills, soft skills, and labor market education. After completing the training program, BBPA graduates will have the tools needed to enter apprenticeship programs to begin promising careers in the construction industry.
Gain knowledge in the following areas:
NCCER CORE CURRICULUM
NCCER Core Curriculum will provide the basic academic aptitude required to enter a construction apprenticeship. Learn blue print reading, construction math and more. The NCCER Core Curriculum is a prerequisite to all other Level 1 craft curriculum. Its modules cover topics such as Basic Safety, Communication Skills and Introduction to Construction Drawings.
With OSHA 10 hours Safety Training Certification, you can learn the basic practices of identifying, reducing, eliminating and reporting hazards associated with work.
SOFT SKILLS TRAINING
Soft Skills Training will encompass all non-construction related, but necessary, job skills such as phone etiquette on the worksite, proper and professional attitude in the work environment and other socially based work skills. These skills involve communication ability, a strong work ethic, taking initiative, interpersonal skills and teamwork.
LABOR MARKET EDUCATION
Labor Market Education will inform you about the realities of the construction market and industry, including learning what segments have the highest demand, how to research the market, how to uncover where the demand is and other information that will provide an advantage toward obtaining future employment.

What’s required for me to be able to apply?
You must be at least 18 years of age and have earned at least a GED in order to apply. Once your application is reviewed, you will need to take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), as well as aptitude tests that a number of the trades require. You must also be a resident of Onondaga County.
How much does the training cost?
The training is FREE to you and paid by Onondaga County. You just have to commit to the entire length of the program and have the desire to learn tools to start an exciting new career in construction.
How long does the pre-apprenticeship program last? And what are the hours?
The program will last ten (10) weeks and the hours are 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
What date does the program start?
If your application is accepted, then you will be contacted no later than Wednesday, December 3, 2014 for pre-testing. Once you are admitted into the program, classes will begin on Monday, December 8, 2014.
Where will the training be held?
BBPA training will take place at SUNY EOC, located at 100 New Street, Syracuse NY 13202.
