Today there was a great outpouring of support for a critically injured Syracuse Police Officer, Detective William Billy” LaShomb, as he was escorted from the hospital to spend his final days in the care of hospice. It became clear that there is confusion over the status of Billy’s health so we feel it’s only appropriate at this time to clarify his condition. We appreciate all of the concerned calls on his behalf but as stated he is now under the care of hospice.
On behalf of his family and the members of the police department we would like to thank everyone for respecting Billy’s privacy while also showing concern for him. We would like to thank the staff at Upstate University Hospital for their dedication, compassion and care, and also for your understanding in dealing with the numerous police officers that visited Billy 24 hours per day. Your compassion for everyone was really appreciated.
We would also like to thank all of our law enforcement brothers and sisters that made today’s sendoff from the hospital very special. Besides SPD the OCSD, State Police, Border Patrol, Syracuse University, Syracuse Fire Department as well as numerous town and village police departments and volunteer fire departments all paid homage to Billy and his family with their show of support in attending and escorting Billy to spend his final days with his loving family. Detective LaShomb’s family was overcome with emotion when they observed the gathering.
We are now asking that everyone respect the family’s privacy in this trying time as no further statements will be made until the appropriate time. The LaShomb family does not desire to be contacted so please understand and respect their wishes. Thank you.
