It is time to curl up with a good book or two, in the backyard if not on the beach! “Jay-Z – Made in America” by Michael Eric Dyson is the book to read for our next Race Matters Book Club session scheduled for Monday, August 24th at 7:00 PM (probably in Zoom-land).
Henry Louis Gates calls this small volume “A poignant portrait of one of hip hops’ most intriguing figures. A TOUR DE FORCE.” If you haven’t explored the world of music & poetry buried in hip hop, and its key purveyor, here’s your chance. As a sociology professor and public intellectual, Michael Eric Dyson is the perfect person to unravel its mysteries.
For good or ill, culture is the context for our political and religious life. Join us in our un-packing of this persistent trend of the last 20 years or so. Our interfaith discussion group is open to all, and you may choose to participate only once or every month. At our May meeting to discuss “The Souls of Black Folks” by W.E.B. DuBois, we had 29 persons from 14 diverse congregations attend our Zoom gathering.
Peter Sarver, ACTS Coordinator for Transformational Reading Groups, will co-facilitate with Dr. Ednita Wright, Professor at Onondaga Community College, for our next gathering. To register for the August 24th session on Jay-Z, email email@example.com
While you are stockpiling your summer reads, pick up a copy of “Grace Will Lead Us Home” by Jennifer Berry Hawes…the September 28th read for the book club. The Pulitzer Prize winning journalist tells the story of “The Charleston Church Massacre and the Hard, Inspiring Journey to Forgiveness.” You may also be interested in the following:
