Syracuse, NY— U.S. Rep. John Katko (NY-24) today announced details for a Telephone Town Hall he will host on Monday, July 12th, at 5:30pm on the future of I-81 and the ongoing negotiations in Congress on comprehensive infrastructure legislation. Rep. Katko invited representatives from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to listen in on the call and gather community feedback on the I-81 project.
The Telephone Town Hall call comes after Rep. Katko learned that the FHWA intends to release the draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for the I-81 project in July. The release of the DEIS will trigger a public comment period, during which FHWA and the New York State Department of Transportation will gather input on the DEIS from the community.
In Congress, Rep. Katko, who serves as Co-Chair of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus Infrastructure Working Group, has also taken a leading role in the ongoing bipartisan negotiations on comprehensive infrastructure legislation. Last month, Katko put forth a framework containing bipartisan infrastructure policies that can be signed into law. As a result, meaningful progress has been made with the White House to secure a long overdue infrastructure package.
“In Central New York, infrastructure continues to be at front of everyone’s mind. In our community, we have several in-demand infrastructure projects, including upgrades to our aging water systems and the long awaited I-81 project,” said Rep. Katko. “On this call, I’ll give an update on where the I-81 project stands, explain next steps, discuss the importance of the public comment period, and take questions from listeners. I’ll also provide an update on my work to advance comprehensive infrastructure legislation and secure much needed investments for local infrastructure projects, including I-81. I look forward to this conversation and invite anyone who is interested to participate in this important event.”
Since coming to Congress, Rep. Katko has worked in his role on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee to advocate for the I-81 project and to engage the public on the future of I-81. In 2019, he held several Town Halls in the City of Syracuse and across Central New York to emphasize the importance of the project and ensure all voices are heard during the planning process. Recently, in recognition that the community remains eager to share feedback on this project with relevant state and federal officials, Rep. Katko committed to holding an additional Town Hall event ahead of the public comment period on the I-81 project.
