Saddened to report the news of the passing of Roland Grimes, former Syracuse University Football player and a friend to the Syracuse Community. Most recently hosting, The Roland Grimes Sports & Entertainment Show online. Condolences to his family and many friends who will miss him sorely. His commitment to social justice was always front and center.
When the local credit union serving the African American community unexpectedly folded, it was Roland Grimes who worked tirelessly with others trying to gain support for this much needed enterprise. While it never reopened, the dedication and passion Roland lent to the cause of creating and supporting African American owned financial institutions was inspirational.
Besides social justice, Roland was a passionate football player. Recalling the times when he would reminisce about the old days; it did not matter, the current political situation, or how sports and politics work. Grimes would always give his raw assessment of the situation.
Grimes wasn’t one of those football players who confined himself to the SU campus, he immersed himself in Syracuse, and through church he mentored youth. He always pitched to us, here in Syracuse about the possibilities of having our “own”. He created his own online presence, which is how many of us kept in touch or kept track of what he was up to.
Roland “Bubba” Grimes, a native of Southeast, Washington, DC. Gentle, with a heart overflowing with kindness; that’s just one of many ways he’ll be remembered, along with all of the shared experiences he’s had with many Syracusans. He never left Syracuse; his spirit endures, his contributions to individuals and this community is immeasurable.
Rest In Power my friend.
