Syracuse, New YorkThe Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office reports that a Deputy, Syracuse Police Officer & Syracuse Firefighter save a man this morning from jumping off the Hiawatha Boulevard Bridge over Interstate 81.

On June 24th at approximately 5:49 A.M., Officers responded to the Hiawatha Boulevard Bridge over I-81 for a suspicious person type call. Upon arrival, Deputy Kristen Mullen observed a male wearing a speedo and cape, standing on the bridge, over the ledge and about to fall into the traffic below.

The male was emotionally distressed and needed help. To complicate matters, there was a high, chain-link fence that was between the male and the deputy. Deputy Mullen quickly grabbed onto the male and held onto him preventing him from falling.

This continued for several minutes, even as the male struggled against the Deputy. Within minutes, Syracuse Police Officer Ryan Jones and off duty Syracuse Firefighter Lieutenant Chris Haley arrived on scene and assisted Deputy Mullen with pulling the male to safety.

The male was uninjured but taken to an area hospital for treatment.
