RiseUp for Social Action is collaborating with a variety of Community Organizations for this Day-long Skill Building Training Session
Syracuse, NY – On Saturday, April 13, RiseUp for Social Action, in collaboration with other community organizations, is holding a day-long skill building training for community organizers and activists from 9 am to 3:30 pm at the Bishop Harrison Center, 1342 Lancaster Ave., Syracuse. The event is open to the public and online registration is available at actionnetwork.org/groups/RiseUp.
“As the level of community activism has grown in Central New York and across the country, there is a greater need to training and education so people can organize effectively to create the changes they seek,” notes RiseUp Core Team organizer Andy Mager. “We’re excited to offer this opportunity for people in the community to learn skills and strategies from one another to strengthen our movements,” he continued.
The day of training will include 3 workshop sessions (with five options during each session) and a keynote talk on community-based efforts to combat poverty featuring John Washington, Director of organizing PUSH Buffalo and Ocesa Keaton of Syracuse Greater HOPE. In his community organizing work, John Washington has lead campaigns on Community Reinvestment, Economic Development and Energy Democracy. He was a major part of negotiating on of the largest Community Benefits Agreements in the country between Key Bank and the Buffalo Niagara Community Reinvestment Coalition.
“The training will be valuable for experienced organizers and newcomers alike,” says Deka Dancil, another RiseUp Core Team organizer. “We’re delighted to be collaborating with a broad range of powerful community organizations in Central New York to help us learn from one another and strengthen collaboration between different groups.”
Workshop options include Working as an Ally to a Targeted Group, Facilitating Effective Meetings, Communication Tools for Organizers and much more. The full schedule and list of workshops is available on the event registration page. There is a sliding scale fee of $0 to $25 for attendance (pay what you are able). Lunch will be provided, along with onsite childcare. Interpretation for Spanish speakers will be available at the keynote and for selected workshops.
The day is organized by RiseUp for Social Action, in conjunction with the Urban Jobs Task Force, CNY Solidarity Coalition, Workers Center of CNY, National Action Network, Seeds of Peace, Uplift Syracuse, Syracuse Peace Council, Parents for Public Schools, CNY NOW, All Saints Parish and the Green Party.
