St. Joseph’s Announces Key Leadership Appointments

Chief Operating Officer, New Board Members Named

SYRACUSE, NY – St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center has announced that AnneMarie Walker-Czyz has been named chief operating officer and senior vice president for operations effective June 15, 2014. Czyz assumes these duties in addition to her role as St. Joseph’s chief nursing officer.

AnneMarie Walker-Czyz

Czyz joined St. Joseph’s in 1997. Since 2008, she has served as vice president of clinical services and chief nursing officer, leading a nationally-recognized team of nurses in the day-to-day delivery of compassionate care to St. Joseph’s patients. Ms. Czyz served as the executive leader of St. Joseph’s recent successful implementation of its electronic health record system.

Under Czyz’s guidance, St. Joseph’s has been designated as a Magnet Hospital for Excellence in Nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. In addition, the Hospital’s intensive care units have been recipients of the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, placing them among the top ICUs in New York State, as well as the nation.

Prior to Czyz’s current leadership role at St. Joseph’s, she served as director of critical care and cardiac services, and has worked as a direct care nurse in cardiac care, a staff educator in cardiac and medical surgical services and a nurse manager. She earned her nursing degree from the St. Joseph’s College of Nursing and completed her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. She also holds a Master of Science and Clinical Nurse Specialist degree from Upstate Medical University. Czyz recently successfully defended her dissertation and will earn her Ed.D. in Executive Leadership.

Mary Brown

St. Joseph’s President and CEO Kathy Ruscitto also announced that Mary Brown will be moving to part time at the end of 2014 and will serve as Business Development Officer for the health care system. Brown has served St. Joseph’s in a variety of key roles since joining the Hospital in 1995; most recently as chief operating officer and senior vice president. Prior to this position, she served as vice president of business development and vice president of ambulatory services.

Brown has contributed to St. Joseph’s in a number of ways, focusing directly on impacting and improving patient care through her contributions related to:

  • Expanding our dialysis services from 2 to 5 centers
  • Establishing a wound care center
  • Creating the organization’s business analysis unit
  • Developing St. Joseph’s medical staff Services
  • Initiating the hospital’s cardiovascular and orthopedic service lines
  • Developing several physician joint ventures
  • Establishing St. Joseph’s bariatric program

For the remainder of the calendar year, Brown will be focused on some business development projects and supporting St. Joseph’s electronic health records team as they begin to realize the benefits of this revolutionary patient information system.

Ruscitto had high praise for Czyz and Brown. “We are thrilled to have AnneMarie move into the key position of chief operating officer, senior vice president for operations in addition to her chief nursing officer role. Her energy, enthusiasm and commitment to patients will be a great value to the organization as we continue to manage health care reform and the continued challenges and opportunities which that brings to us,” said Ruscitto. “I am also very pleased that Mary has agreed to stay on to assist with the continued expansion of our health care system,” she added.

In addition to the staff leadership appointments, the St. Joseph’s Board of Trustees has named two new Board members:
