State Agencies Encourage New Yorkers to Support Small Businesses

National Small Business Week Takes Place May 5 to May 11

Empire State Development (ESD) and the Departments of Labor, Agriculture and Markets, and Taxation and Finance today encouraged New Yorkers to support local small businesses during National Small Business Week from May 5 to May 11. A cornerstone of the state’s economy, the more than 530,000 small business proprietors across New York account for 98 percent of all businesses and employ more than 3 million people, which is 40 percent of the state’s private sector workforce.

ESD President, CEO and Commissioner Howard Zemsky said, “New York’s economy is built on small businesses that help families and communities thrive, employ millions and generate economic growth throughout the state, and I encourage New Yorkers to support their local small businesses this week and throughout the year.”

ESD and its Small Business Division assist companies of all stages, whether they are just starting or looking to expand. Various programs and initiatives have been designed to encourage small business growth and help entrepreneurs maximize their opportunities for success. ESD offers loans, venture financing, tax credits and incentives to qualifying businesses of all stages, including those designated as Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs). For more information, visit ESD’s website at www.esd.ny.gov or https://esd.ny.gov/doing-business-ny/small-business-hub.

Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon said, “Small businesses are the backbone of New York’s economy and a treasured part of our thriving communities. The Department of Labor is proud to support small businesses all year long with anything from applying for tax credits and incentives to assisting with staff recruitments and training.”

The New York State Department of Labor offers a multitude of free services for businesses of all sizes, including job postings on Governor Cuomo’s Jobs Express website, access to thousands of qualified candidates in our talent pool, career fairs and customized recruitments, and even Human Resources consultation services. These services are available to help businesses list their jobs, find the right candidates, access hiring and training incentives, obtain business tax credits and incentives, access HR service and technical assistance, and find layoff aversion resources. State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball, also commented stating, “The Department of Agriculture and Markets proudly supports small business owners throughout New York State, and there are countless venues and goods for consumers to choose from. Our farmers’ markets, Taste NY stores and other retailers offer an amazing array of New York grown and produced foods, craft beverages and other goods made by our neighbors. Whether we choose locally-sourced food and drinks for our dinner tables, or support partners in the forestry industry by purchasing quality wood products, like lumber and furniture, I encourage all New Yorkers to invest in our communities by spending locally and supporting small businesses.”

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets supports New York’s more than 33,000 farms, 650 farmers markets and thousands of agribusinesses across the State through its divisions that provide technical assistance and its marketing programs, including New York State Grown & Certified and Taste NY. The NYS Grown & Certified program markets local growers participating in safe food handling and environmental sustainability programs, helping them better compete in the marketplace. The Taste NY program promotes New York food and beverage industries of all sizes and encourages consumers across the globe to buy local products. The program has created opportunities for local producers to showcase their goods at large public events, and at welcome centers, Taste NY stores, displays and concession opportunities located at more than 70 locations in New York.

According to Executive Deputy Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Andrew Morris, “The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in New York State. Small businesses are the backbone of this state’s economy, and we’re committed to helping these visionaries benefit from the wide range of incentive programs across multiple industries.”

New York State believes starting or growing a business should be easy and affordable. More than a dozen credits are available to businesses to hire, employ, and train local workers. They may qualify for location-based credits too, and exemptions for improving properties. Visit the Tax Department’s new Business incentives webpage to learn more about what’s available in specific industries, such as farming and agriculture, research and development, and manufacturing.

Additionally, an Online Services account is a must for small business tax administration. Key among the dozens of services is Sales Tax Web File. This online tool facilitates on-time filing and allows a business to schedule payments in advance, save bank account information for future payments, view filing and payment history, and more.
