Statement from Senator John W. Mannion regarding Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) Ending The 20 Percent Funding Withhold

Geddes – Senator John W. Mannion (D-Geddes) today released the following statement on OPWDD ending its 20 percent funding withhold:

This is the outcome I have been working towards every day since taking office. As the Chairman of the Disabilities Committee, I will continue to speak out to protect and fund services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

For caregivers and providers across New York there was no difference between a withhold and a funding cut. The bottom line was they were receiving 20 percent less from the state to provide vital services – on behalf of the state – for the most vulnerable among us during a global pandemic.

I am grateful for the strong working relationship that has been established with OPWDD staff. I know the regular and open dialogue contributed to this victory. I commend the governor for restoring this desperately needed funding.
