Syracuse, N.Y. – At approximately 5:27 a.m. on Thursday April 11th, the Syracuse Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 139-41 W. Bissell St. Within 3 minutes of receiving the alarm, Engine Company 3 (808 Bellevue Ave.) was on scene of the 3 ½ -story wood framed dwelling and reported smoke pushing from the attic area. Firefighters entered the structure to locate and extinguish the fire and search for victims. As firefighters pushed through the heat and heavy smoke conditions, they encountered 4 occupants trying to exit the structure and assisted them to safety. The fire was reported “out” within 30 minutes and crews remained on scene for a time performing overhaul operations.
Working smoke detectors were found throughout the three-family dwelling. Fire investigators have determined the fire originated in the second-floor living room ceiling, the cause is still under investigation. There was no reported firefighter or civilian injuries during this incident. The Red Cross is assisting the occupants of the dwelling.
