Syracuse, N.Y. – Syracuse Firefighters were on the scene of a major house fire within 1 minute. At approximately 11:46 p.m. on January 21, 2020 fire crews were dispatched to 1828 South State Street. Engine Co. 8 and Truck 8 (2412 South Salina Street) were on the scene by 11:47 p.m. They reported heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the 2 ½ story wood framed dwelling and stretched a hose line inside. These first arriving firefighters found heavy fire on the second floor, extending into the attic.
As additional firefighters arrived, a systematic search for potential victims was performed and additional hose lines were stretched. The fire was extinguished and no victims were located. The four adults were able to escape the blaze prior to the fire departments arrival. Fire Investigators have determined the origin to be a second floor bedroom. The cause was an occupant fell asleep smoking. The occupants attempted to extinguish the fire prior to calling 911.
The second floor of the home was severely damaged by the fire. The occupants are being assisted by the Red Cross. AMR, National Grid and the Syracuse Police were also on the scene. There were no reported injuries.
