Syracuse Juneteenth Celebration 2013 June 14 -15

Juneteenth recognizes the significance of June 19, 1865, the day the last American slaves in Texas and Louisiana heard about their freedom because of the Civil War.

Syracuse organizers say last year’s event drew about 28,000 attendees, who celebrated diversity and recognized the sacrifices and challenges African Americans faced to earn freedom.

Friday June 14th “food, fun and family day” includes a 10 a.m. flag-raising at City Hall and a 5 p.m. party at the Spirit of Jubilee Park on South Avenue, with Gospel Music.

Saturday June 15th events start at noon with the Visions of Victory parade that begins at Dr. King Elementary School on Raynor Avenue and ends at Clinton Square, where local bands and dance troupes will perform from 1:30 to 10 p.m.
