Syracuse Police Chief Kenton Buckner Granted Additional Year to Complete NYS Certification

Syracuse Police Chief requested and was given the extension

On Tuesday November 12, 2019, Syracuse Police Chief Kenton Buckner was informed by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) that he has been granted an additional year to complete his New York State certification. In making his request, Buckner asked DCJS to consider the challenge of simultaneously taking over and managing the department, completing hundreds of hours of classroom training, and dramatically improving his physical conditioning.

“While I have finished all of my required coursework and the practical requirements that can be done to this point, I am not yet ready for the Fitness Test requirement. The 1.5 miles run is my primary challenge ,” Buckner said. “I’m confident that, with additional time, I can complete the physical training requirements. And that is my goal. Mayor Walsh authorized my inquiry of DCJS, so I am further motivated and determined to keep my commitment to him.”
