Syracuse Police Identify Officers involved in Grant Blvd Shooting

Police were called for menacing complaint

On Tuesday, December 31st, 2019, at around 4:46 PM, Officers responded to a residence in the 700 block of Grant Blvd. for a menacing complaint.  Officers received reports that a male, Michael Viola, 22, of Syracuse was threatening family members with an edged weapon.  Upon Officers arrival, they encountered Viola who was armed with a edged weapon.

Officers Brandon Hanks and Joseph LeBlanc then discharged their weapon, with at least one of them striking the male. The male was transported to Upstate Hospital, where is in critical but stable condition.    The investigation is active and ongoing. Both Officers Hanks and LeBLanc have been with the Department for three years and are currently on paid administrative leave per Department Policy.
