Syracuse Police Release Timeline for Ezequiel Ruiz Homicide Investigation, 15 Year Old Suspect in Custody


Syracuse Police Department has released the timeline for Ezequiel Ruiz Homicide Investigation.

January 21, 2020, at approximately 11:00 PM: Syracuse Police Officers responded to 1445 S. Salina St., in regards to a motor vehicle crash. Additionally, a citizen 911 caller had reported hearing gunshots. Upon arrival, Officers located a victim, Ezequiel Ruiz, in the driver seat of a vehicle. It was evident that Ruiz had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene. 

 January 21, 2020 – Present: An investigation was immediately commenced by CID Detectives. Numerous people were interviewed, and an extensive neighborhood canvass was conducted. In addition, physical evidence relative to the incident was collected, and search warrants were executed.  

As a result of the above efforts, a fifteen-year-old suspect in this incident was quickly identified.

January 23, 2020:  The fifteen-year-old suspect was taken into custody without incident.

In regard to this investigation, the fifteen-year-old suspect was charged with the following crimes: 

  • 1 count of Murder in the 2nd degree
  • 1 count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree
  • 1 count of Attempted Robbery in the First Degree.


He was lodged at the Hillbrook Detention Center. 
The investigation is still continuing.
