New York congresswoman apologizes for repeating ‘N-word’
by The Associated Press

Monday July 20, 2009, 6:58 PM

ALBANY, NY — New York Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney apologized Monday for repeating a racial slur when she quoted another person during an interview.

Calling the N-word disgusting, the Democrat said she was relaying a story as it was told to her.
“I apologize for having repeated a word I find disgusting,” Maloney said in a written statement. “It’s no excuse, but I was so caught up in relaying the story exactly as it was told to me that, in doing so, I repeated a word that should never be repeated.”

Maloney is quoted on http://www.cityhallnews.comcriticizing Democratic U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, whom Maloney may run against. Maloney says she got a call from someone who used the slur in accusing Gillibrand of backing English-only public education.

“Sen. Gillibrand believes that any use of the word is offensive,” said Matt Canter, a spokesman for the senator. “Furthermore, she opposes English-only policies and supports expanding opportunities for immigrants to learn English and thrive in our economy.”

Civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton criticized Maloney for using the term.

Maloney issued her apology before Sharpton raised objections. He still said he was disappointed and faulted her for not identifying the caller who originally used the word and for not reprimanding the person when the conversation first took place.

“Is this a delayed disgust?” Sharpton asked. The civil rights leader has tried to discourage rappers from using the racial slur in their music and performances.

Why doesn’t the fine Reverend criticize the Hip-Hop artists that use the “N” word in their lyrics? Or ist das verboten?

Should make for a great Senatorial race next year. A wild out of control spiral to the depths of hypocrisy as the two Democratic candiates dog fight their way across the mass media to prove who cares about Central NY the least.
Fortunatley wherever the winner (or loser depending on your viewpoint)lands, they’ll have the comfort of of a soft landing on Senator Schumer who will certainly never be outdone in that department.

So she is apologizing, so she can be politically correct, right? If she feels like most Americans, that there are good black people, and then there are scumbag criminal thugs…referred to as Nig****, what is the big deal? She calls them like she sees them and should be respected for her views. Just like calling some whites WHITE TRASH! Who the heck cares? Don’t be politically correct and lose all respect, when you are for REAL in your thoughts and words. Don’t let the goody two shoes sway you…call it like you see it! The color doesn’t matter! A piece of garbage is a piece of garbage, White, Black or otherwise!

cuse105, I have to disagree with you big time, yes no matter what race there are good and there are bad. That being said in no case is it right to refer to any race in a derogatory word. I think the N word holds more weight then white trash. Theres a more offensive word for whites that is worse. Using racist words like the N-word furthor empowers race batters(spelling?) thats what they live off of. But in the situation I dont believe Maloney owed an apology as she was not being racist, people need to toughen up. White politicians nowadays are so scared of being labaled racist especially republicans by democrats because thats how democrats operate….They threatened to deem (r) who didnt vote for sotomayer racist, what people fail to remember is Alito was hispanic but was not sworn in because of (d)….time for people to stop being scared of that over-used word especially whites as long as what you say is not racist and that includes not using derogatory terms abusivly

Al Sharpton is a Nigg3r. Seriously, he needs to mind his own business. When MJ died, within minutes he and Jesse were on the phone as ‘representatives for the family’.
Is anyone else sick of hearing this guy b1tch about everything?
Who here wants to start an organization for the advancement of whites?

syrorange23,
My bad. I honestly didn’t see that last line or I wouldn’t have said anything. However I do find it intriguing that Sharpton has “tried to discourage rappers from using the racial slurs.”

If it were a white rapper using the “N” word, the fine Reverend would be on him/her faster than he was with Imus.

“The civil rights leader has tried to discourage rapers from using the racial slur in their music and performances.”

Has anyone listed to rap music and noticed how often they use the “B” and the “H” word for women, or the “F” word for gays and the “N” word every other sentence?
She was quoting someone else. Good thing she wasn’t quoting some rap lyrics.

Raper 50 cent said. “It’s like bad meaning good. The same way they use (the “N” word).”

Seriously? I’ll have to remember that, in the unlikely event, I ever use one of those words at work and get reported to human resources. “It’s like bad meaning good.” I was really giving a complement.

Come on Rev. do you think Maloney’s comment is the problem.

The worst part is that its White America out of touch like Mrs Maloney who thing no one but the KKK uses the N word anymore.

Hilarious. She needs to spend a month or two in the hood and wake up.

Why should she apologize, she’s a racist. Her heart is fragile. It is filled with an ancient disease of racism and hatred, that many in fact, sadly suffer from. Just because the United States President is an individual of color, doesn’t mean that the disease of racial hatred is dead. It is, and always will be alive. It is sad that we have fought against every principle that this Nation was built upon, long before the beginning of it’s establishment.

HEY BLACK AMERICANS!!!! YOU DON’T LIKE THE NEGATIVE FEELINGS THE “WORD” BRINGS???
It only has the power you allow it to have.
All races & ethnicities have had & do have “slurs”.
Another one from recently that has inspiried so much hate? Jewish……. Jew was the Nasty hurtful slang, now widely accepted. 6 million tortured & killed, similar descrimination here in America. However they chose to move on.

When arguing with a woman “B1tc%” doesn’t have nearly the “negative” impact it used to, why? Although disrespectful women have moved on. As comedians often call it “drop the C-bomb” still not a wise move……
The N word like all others will only have the negative power that people allow it to have…..

We could get rid of a lot of the racism in America if we could get rid of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton who are doing their best to keep it going! Also get rid of the phrase “AFRICAN AMERICAN” because it doesn’t apply to most of the black people in America.

Lincoln lost his life to 4 red neck conspirators who did not know how to hide in Virginia woods. Lincoln’s Emancipation wanted to contain slavery from further expansion. As Alexis Toqueville said that no one can be completely freed from slavery. Freed slaves was a result of a group effort rather than from one person which would be a paradigm of despotism. I am a huge fan of Lincoln’s.

I’m so sick of people apologizing for everything so that they don’t hurt someones feelings. If it was me I tell ’em to get a grip I was repeating a conversation that I had with someone that used the word. I have nothing to apologize for. Where is the white peoples apology for having to put up with the uneducated, criminal, disrespectful, irresponsible and just plain stupid behavior we have to deal with on a daily basis? Not to mention the fact that most of them are supported by us. When are they going to pull up their pants get a job and talk and act like a human? I’m tired of the apologies over a stupid word that they use on a regular basis. We don’t go around calling each other crackers or honkies (do they say that or was that just George Jefferson?). If they want to call me a cracker, have at it. What kind am I? Ritz or saltine?

Abraham Lincoln, Fredrick Douglas, the 54th Massachusetts regiment, the first African Americans that fought for the United States Armed forces, who inspired Robert Gould Shaw, a White comanding officer to lay down his life on the assult of Ft. Wagner. Ufortunately It was unsucsessful. Abraham Lincoln strongly honored the 54th and many other African American soldiers who help change the tide of that war. So many other beautiful souls of this Nation set out to defy the demons of slavery. The right of freedom is not free, it is fought for… The N word is powerful. Al Shapton, and Jesse Jackson are from an era that fought for freedom, and were called n…..’s for just wanting respect for all human beings. They were inflicted by the disease of racial hatred by those who’s souls are wretched. Slaves, Blacks, or African Americans were not racist. Those who are, are a reflection of masters creation.
