Awards to be presented at Annual Recognition and Celebration Luncheon on June 11th
Syracuse, N.Y. – Vera House, Inc., a local not-for-profit, working to end domestic and sexual violence in Central New York, will award the Sr. Mary Vera Recognition Award at their Annual Recognition and Celebration Luncheon at the DoubleTree Hotel on June 11, 2015 to Joe Horan of Syracuse. The Sr. Mary Vera Award is given to a member of the community who has made a significant contribution to the fields of domestic and sexual violence prevention and who has performed this work in a manner consistent with the humility, gentleness, and humanitarian spirit reflected by Sr. Mary Vera Blank, one of the agency’s founders and namesake.
Joe Horan is a Physical Education Teacher at Hughes Elementary School and Coach. The Building Men Program, led by Coach Horan, is a positive, enrichment & support program for boys in an after school setting. He uses this setting to invite speakers in to speak positivity into the lives of the young men that attend the program to promote academic excellence, integrity and character.
Joe is a shining example of a man “leading by example” to end violence against women and girls in our community. He’s championed the prevention message and is actively implementing programming through his Building Men Program within the Syracuse City School District that promotes Healthy Relationships and Healthy Masculinity. He’s been an ongoing presence and force in initiatives to end violence in our community.
In addition to the Sr. Mary Vera Recognition Award, Vera House will present Special Appreciation Awards to: Patrick Winslow, manager of Heid’s of Liverpool; AlterImage Photography; Joe Walker, owner of Balloons Over Syracuse; Upstate Printing and Ryan Hope Travis, former Artistic Director of the Paul Robeson Performing Arts Company.

Vera House works to end domestic violence and sexual assault in our community through various programs and services. The agency provides a 24-hour crisis, support and information line, and emergency shelter to ensure that all individuals are safe from violence.
